How to create a Compound Search Task

How to create a Compound Search Tasklink

Many search requirements can be completed with the search patterns which come packaged with the Ascema Endpoint system. For more specialised or specific search requirements the Ascema Endpoint system supports the building of more complex queries in the form of Compound Search Tasks.

Creating a Compound Search Tasklink

As with creating a simple search task you start the process by selecting the Create new Search Task button to launch the Search Task wizard

  • On the Name page of the Search Task wizard enter a meaningful name for your new search
  • Select the Next button
  • The Patterns page of the Search Task wizard will be displayed
  • For a compound search criteria select the Create Compound Pattern button
  • The Compound Pattern will be displayed

  • This dialog has more options than the simple pattern.
  • Each Select Pattern button will offer you the same set of choices as you will see on a Select Simple Pattern button

  • For this example select a Global pattern and then choose Keyword pattern

  • The Add Keyword dialog will be displayed

Info

In the Add Keyword dialog you can enter one or more keywords each separated by commas. Each keyword may consiste of either a single word or could be two or more words separated by spaces which form a key phrase. A keyword may also have a * character at the end in which case any word starting with the defined keyword will match; so birth* will match the words birthdate, birthday and also the word birth. The wildcard character * can only be used at the end of a word when creating keyword searches.

When you create a list of keywords within the Add Keyword dialog a search will alert if any of the matching words are found, if multiple words in your list match then you may see multiple reported items in your search reports.

  • You may add one of more Keyword search terms in the keyword section of this dialog
  • When you have finished entering your Keywords select Add
  • The Compound Pattern dialog will be displayed
  • The search term you have entered will be shown as an incomplete compound pattern
  • Select the right hand Select Pattern button
  • From the choices available select Global and Keyword pattern
  • The Add Keyword dialog will be displayed
  • Enter a Keyword which uses the wildcard character and click the Add button
  • The Compound Pattern dialog will be displayed
  • The second search term you have entered will be shown as an incomplete compound pattern
  • The final part of creating the compound pattern is to choose the operator between the two sides of the pattern
  • Select the Choose an operator button and a list of the available operators will be shown
  • From the displayed list choose the And operator
  • The Compound Pattern dialog will be displayed with the completed compound pattern
  • You may choose to save this complex pattern for later use
  • Select the Save this complex pattern control
  • Enter a name for your new complex pattern
  • Then select the Create button
  • The Patterns page of the Search Tasks wizard will be displayed
  • The compound pattern you have created will be shown under Selected Patterns

Choose a confidence for your pattern and complete the wizard in the same way as for How to create an Ascema Search Task

Info

When a compound pattern has been saved with a name it will become available for selection in new simple or compound pattern queries. The search patterns which you have created for yourself will appear in the pattern menu as Custom patterns

Custom patterns can be added to Search Tasks as soon as they have been created and you can continue to do so unless you choose to delete them.

By using Custom patterns within new compound search patterns quite complex searches can be created and used
