How to install the Endpoint agent

How to install the Ascema Agentlink

To get set up for using Ascema to help you manage any confidential information under your control you will need to first install the Ascema Agent on your computer

Step-by-step guidelink

Before installing the Ascema Agent you will first need to download the installer. Your system administrator should inform you where the installer can be downloaded from.

  • Double-click on the DiscoveryEndpointAgent msi file to start the installation process
  • You will usually see a security warning about opening this executable file
  • Depending on your version of Windows operating system you will then see a Windows security confirmation request. Select Yes to proceed with the installation
  • The installer will then install the Ascema agent on your computer

Once the Ascema Agent is installed it should appear as an icon on the taskbar, depending on your setup you may need to expand out the icons to see it

If the Ascema icon is showing as grey then this indicates that it is searching the network for the Ascema manager. Once it finds the manager and connects to it the icon will show red as in this image and your installation is all set up ready to go.

Installing with Powershelllink

Should you need to perform remote installation of the Ascema Agent or set install options to customise the install then invoking the installer from Powershell provides you with additional tools.

For a basic installation scripted via Powershell, either local or via remote management tools :

.\DiscoveryEndpointAgent-2.2.msi /passive

There are some additional parameters which can be supplied to the installer. These are as follows:

  • SERVERURL - set the server address of the Ascema Endpoint Manager, particularly useful in network environments where the UDP traffic used to discover manager location may be restricted
  • FILESERVER - if set to TRUE this will restrict the Agent to searching in folders which are shared

So to install on a network where discovery may not function due to UDP restrictions the Powershell command to install might be:

.\DiscoveryEndpointAgent-2.2.msi SERVERURL={server hostname or IP address} /passive

Installing on Mac OSXlink

Before installing on a Mac OSX computer you will need to download the installer DiscoveryEndpointAgentMac-2.2.pkg

To perform the installation click on the package icon and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you need to set the server address of the Ascema Endpoint Server, particularly useful in network environments where the UDP traffic used to discover server location may be restricted then this should be done before running the installer

  • Create a folder {user.home}/Library/Application Support/geolang/agent
  • In this folder create a file agent.ini
  • The file should have the contents

[server] server={Domain name or IP address of server}

  • Run the installer by clicking on the package icon
